Charger compatibility comes down to three things, and getting any of them wrong means the charger either will not connect or will not complete a charge cycle: pack voltage, plug style, and whether your cart has an onboard computer.
Work out your voltage by counting
Open the seat and count the batteries, then read the voltage stamped on one of them.
- Six 6V batteries = 36V
- Six 8V batteries = 48V
- Four 12V batteries = 48V
- Eight 6V batteries = 48V
The charger cares about total pack voltage, not battery count. A 36V charger will not correctly service a 48V pack, and running one on the wrong pack is how chargers die.
Plug styles are brand-specific
This is the part that catches people who buy on voltage alone. Club Car's Powerdrive receptacle, EZGO's D-style plug and Yamaha's connector are all different physical fittings. Within EZGO there are further variations — Powerwise, Delta-Q on later RXV models, and the Anderson SB-50 on some Marathons. Match the receptacle, not just the voltage.
What actually fails
Most "dead battery" calls are not dead batteries.
Battery cables. Corroded or loose cable ends raise resistance and the cart behaves exactly like a flat pack under load. Cable kits are cheap and are the first thing to check.
The solenoid. A click with no movement means the solenoid coil is energising but the contacts inside may be burnt. It is one of the cheapest parts on the vehicle.
The charger receptacle. The socket on the cart wears and arcs before the charger itself fails.
One bad cell. In a series pack, one failing battery drags the whole set down. Test each battery individually rather than replacing all six on a hunch — although if they are all the same age, replacing as a set is the right call.
Care that extends pack life
Charge after every use rather than waiting for a low state. Keep the tops clean — dirt and electrolyte film create a slow discharge path across the case. For flooded batteries, check water levels monthly and top up with distilled water after charging, never before. Keep terminals coated to slow corrosion.
Buying a replacement charger
Match, in this order: pack voltage, receptacle type, then amperage. Higher amperage charges faster but generates more heat; 15–18A is a common sweet spot for a domestic setting. Never use an automotive battery charger — the charge profile is wrong for deep-cycle cells.
