Almost every wasted golf cart parts order starts the same way: someone knows they have a Club Car and orders on that basis. Club Car has built two very different carts under that name, and between them they cover more than forty years of production. Getting this wrong costs you a return; getting it right takes about ten seconds.
The ten-second visual test
Stand at the front of the cart and look at the nose.
Club Car DS (1981–2013). Squared-off body. The front has a separate bumper bolted on, and the body panels meet at visible seams. The roof struts are straight and the whole shape is angular. If it looks like it was designed with a ruler, it is a DS.
Club Car Precedent (2004 onward). Rounded body with a single moulded front cowl that wraps into an integrated bumper. No separate bumper bar. The lines are curved and the front looks like one piece rather than several.
These two overlapped in production between 2004 and 2013, which is exactly why a visual check beats guessing from the year.
Where the serial number is
The serial plate is the definitive answer. On a DS, look under the passenger-side dash, or on the frame rail behind the driver-side rear wheel. On a Precedent, check the same two places — most have it under the glovebox area on the passenger side.
The first two characters are the model-year code. That matters more than you might expect, because both platforms changed significantly mid-run.
The year breaks that actually change parts
DS, around 1993. Body and lighting changed. A light kit sold for a 1993-and-up DS will not mount correctly on an earlier cart.
DS, around 1995. The brake design changed. Brake shoes, drums and spring kits are sold as pre-1995 or 1995-and-up, and they are not interchangeable.
Precedent, around 2009. The IQ electrical system arrived. Speed sensors, motor magnets and controller parts differ before and after this point.
What crosses between DS and Precedent
Very little of the body or seating. The 2004 redesign changed the seat frame, the cowl, the floorboard shape and most of the mounting points. Treat them as separate catalogues for:
- Seat covers and cushions
- Enclosures, windshields and body panels
- Light kits and cowl-mounted lamps
- Floor mats
- Front and rear bumpers, fender flares
Genuinely universal items do cross over, because they clamp to square tube or bolt to the roof supports rather than to the body: mirrors, cup holders, fans, phone mounts, steering wheels (with the right adapter) and rear cargo baskets.
Where Onward and Tempo fit
Both are built on Precedent geometry. Onward is the consumer personal-transport line, Tempo is the fleet course cart. In practice this means most Precedent-fit seat covers, floor mats, brake parts and steering components carry over to both. Light kits and trim pieces are the usual exceptions, because the cowl detailing differs.
A short ordering checklist
- Identify DS or Precedent from the nose.
- Read the serial plate for the model year.
- Note whether the cart is gas or electric — drivetrain, charger and controller parts differ.
- For electric, note the pack voltage (count the batteries: six 6V is 36V; six 8V or four 12V is 48V).
- Match all four against the year range printed in the listing.
That is the whole trick. Four facts, written down once, and you stop returning parts.
